Feedlot · Crush

Every animal is in the record before it leaves the crush.

Every action at the rail is recorded on an iPad or iPhone as it happens, with or without signal. Nobody types it up afterwards.

One head on the iPad, four jobs

From a working crush at a 10,000-head feedlot

A head takes 16 seconds to weigh and draft, and 1.4 seconds of that is on the iPad. In the busiest hour 131 head went through, four jobs on each, and one pass writes 8 records, from weight to pen.

Filmed at that crush · 13 Oct 2026

One head of a draft: 476 kg, recorded 16 seconds after the head before it.

Without signal

The crush keeps recording when the signal drops. Everything a run needs is on the iPad, and every record is saved there first.

Platform
One weigh-and-draft run on 1 Oct 2026.
  • Every animal in the run is on the iPad before it starts. Data sync shows when it last synced.

  • If the office rejects a record, the rest still send. That animal is listed under Look.

  • Close the app without losing data. Unsaved entries come back for 12 hours.

Scales and readers

Use the scales and readers already at your crush. They connect over Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or through an adaptor for older devices.

Learnt at the crush

Not every animal comes through cleanly. We know how to handle the everyday cases.

Your device
  • Handle a tag that isn’t on file. Read it again, skip it or induct it as new.

    Arrivals

  • Let an animal out and finish it later. What’s recorded so far is kept.

  • Catch two animals on the scale. A weight over 1.6 times the last one is questioned before saving.

  • Retry a job that didn’t save. Only what failed runs again, so nothing is recorded twice.

  • Correct an animal’s sex at the crush. Its class changes with it.

  • Record who gave each dose. A dose with no giver isn’t saved.

The crush handles 32 more like these.

  • A tag from an animal that’s left
  • One tag on two animals
  • A new tag already on another animal
  • A tag read early or twice
  • A weight with no tag read
  • Glare on the indicator’s screen
  • A reader or scale not connected
  • An animal from a pen outside the run
  • An animal back through a second time
  • Cattle that never came down the race
  • A scale that hasn’t settled
  • A scale that drops out mid-animal
  • A scale set to the wrong units
  • A reading that looks wrong
  • A weight outside the run’s range
  • A figure entered on the last animal
  • A job that can’t be done on this one
  • A job it’s already had
  • A job that doesn’t suit its sex
  • An HGP dose for an HGP-free animal
  • An animal still on withholding
  • A bottle that runs out mid-run
  • A per-kg dose with no weight yet
  • Castration with no birth date
  • A class that isn’t on the plan
  • Sex and class that don’t match
  • An animal pulled to hospital
  • A death recorded at the crush
  • An animal no gate fits
  • A gate that only partly moves
  • Animals left on a gate at close
  • A plan change mid-run

On the record

Every record from the crush keeps who made it, when and in which run. Replace a tag or change a class and the old value is kept as well.

  • Classes. The class before and after each change.

  • Pens. The pen it left and the pen it went to.

  • Doses. Who gave each one, and from which batch.

Orders at the crush

Score each animal against your orders while it’s in the crush. Each order picked for the run gets a score from 0 to 100, even without signal.

Offtake & dispatch
  • Each score updates with today’s weight.

  • Withholding or an HGP dose can rule an order out. The card says when withholding clears.

  • See what each score was before today’s records.

  • Orders are booked in the office. The crush only shows the scores.

FAQ

Questions crews ask about the crush.

How fast is it at the crush?

Our data from working crush runs shows a head takes about 16 seconds to weigh and draft, and 1.4 seconds of that is on the iPad. With four jobs on each animal, it takes about 23 seconds, 4.3 of them on the iPad.

Does it work without signal?

Yes. Every record is saved on the iPad first and sent to the office when signal returns, in the order it was taken.

Platform
What if an animal has lost its tags?

Find it by the tag it still has and give it a new one. If both are gone, pick it from the run’s animals still to come, listed nearest last weight first.

Can we see who changed a tag, and why?

Yes. The animal’s identifier history in the office shows every EID, VID and lot number it has carried, with who changed each one, when, in which run and why.

NFAS & audit
Which scales and readers does it work with?

Common crush scales and tag readers, read straight into the app. The Works with page lists the makers, and if yours isn’t connected yet, we connect it at no charge.

Works with
Which phones and tablets does it run on?

iPhone and iPad today, with Android coming. The office sees the same records on the web.
