Underneath

Underneath every feedlot is its own record. The same layers keep it current at every feedlot, and the same checks run across all of them.

A drawn feedlot cut out of the earth, its cut going on below the ground into layers: Sync, Overnight, Shares and agreements, and its own database at the foot. Cattle are received at its yard and recorded on a phone, and the record goes down the cut through Sync into the database; that night a light runs along the Overnight layer, and what is shared leaves for the owner. The view pulls back to six feedlots on the same layers, two of them still to come, with three planes over them all: a check every five minutes, a watchdog over the runs every night and a security check every night, each sweeping across and leaving every feedlot checked.
  1. 07:10 64 head are received at the yard and recorded on the phone.
  2. 07:10 The phone keeps them, and sends them as soon as it has signal.
  3. 07:10 They are written to the feedlot’s own database, in Sydney.
  4. That night The night’s runs go over every record: forecasts, fees, weather and checks.
  5. Any time Owners and buyers see only what is shared with them.
  6. Every feedlot Every feedlot stands on its own: its own database, sync and storage.
  7. Every five minutes Each feedlot’s database, sync and storage are checked.
  8. Every night A watchdog checks that each feedlot’s runs finished.
  9. Every night A security check goes over each feedlot’s database.

One record

Everyone sees the same record. A weight taken at the crush is on the office’s page for the run about two seconds later, and on the owner’s link within ten.

Out of signal, the iPad keeps the weight and sends it, in order, as soon as signal is back.
